So the votes are in, the decision’s been made. There’s no use crying about it. Democracy has spoken even when democracy has spoken in the oddest fashion. The person with the most votes hasn’t won. No, it was the primped person with the most electoral college votes. That’s US democracy.

  1. “We are sleeping on a volcano… A wind of revolution blows, the storm is on the horizon.” ~ Alexis de Tocqueville He is also credited with the following: “Every country has the government it deserves” and “In a democracy people get the leaders they deserve.”

Unfortunately, in this election, *almost* 50% of the population is about to be punished by the reactionary “broom sweeping” of the others. I am afraid.

The only private blog I follow posted a response with this to say: “9/11 and 11/9: The Two Worst Days In American History” – my personal reaction of shock, horror and sorrow feels the same, in any case.

  2. I’m guessing there must be a country somewhere where the one with the most votes wins, just doesn’t spring to mind. Elsewhere Democracy does odd things which are far better than the alternatives.
Who knows where this will end up? Somehow I can’t see a Republican (sort of) President, Republican Senate and a Republican Congress (‘who do they think they are?’ says the Senate) being as monolithic and as united as they would wish.

    • We use a proportional representation system in Ireland, for parliamentary elections, one person, one vote for presidential elections. Parties in power will inevitably realign constituency boundaries to suit their candidates’ prospect of re-election and thus defeat the notion of PR in the first place.
